Boasting one of the most famous views in the city, Crescent Heights is one of the best candidates for inner-city custom home building. Large lots and established infrastructure appeal to custom home planning while the neighborgood itself promotes a genuinely unique personality.
Bound by several key NW and NE thoroughfares, Crescent Heights features the busy business districts of centre street and the Trans-Canada, gorgeous strolls like McHugh Bluff which runs beneath Crescent Road, and permanent fixtures like the famed Peter’s Drive-in.
Crescent Heights also holds the distinction of having been it’s own village back in the day, having been established a staggering 120 years ago. One can see this history in the large boulevards and the plentiful parks and the prime location within what eventually became the city of Calgary. The village of Crescent Heights has become an enviable inner-city community; one that features some of the most impressive and unique custome homes in the city.
Along the walking path on Crescent Road, while enjoying a view of the north side of the downtown core, you can see some of the more impressice builds that have been created in recent years. Mixed well with old structures and new, Crescent Road is a feast for anyone interested in homes and custom design.
While the main strip of homes with a view are reserved for those of a certain income bracket, Crescent Heights contains a wealth of land, with lots and builds for any income. It is this quality mix of demongraphics that makes Crescent Heights such a diverse atmosphere for inner-city life in Calgary.
Van Manna Custom Homes has builds underway in this neighborhood, enjoying the large lot size to afford comfortable homes in this sought after location. If someone were to work in the downtown core, they could stroll down McHugh Bluff and across the pedestrian bridge by the Calgary Curling Club and into Princes Island Park and be at work in under 20 minutes. And if they are feeling energetic at the end of the day, they can climb the stairs at Mchugh Bluff park back up to Crescent Road and catch the last light of the view.
Crescent Heights mixes history with urban pulse and quiet warmth to create an inner-city life that is both storied and a bit of a best kept secret. And being able to walk off one of Peter’s epic milkshakes with a nice stroll back home afterwards never hurt anyone either.
We caught up with the home-owner from one of our finished custom-builds to get her thoughts on the project.
Q: What was your dream for your home?
A: My husband and I are empty-nesters. We wanted a home that would take us through the next 20+ years in comfort but also in style. We love to entertain so we wanted the kitchen and family room to take center stage.
Q: What was the best part of working with Van Manna?
A: The best part of working with Van Manna was their adaptability, their great creativity and their careful attention to detail. There wasn’t anything we wanted that they couldn’t accommodate and several times they came up with wonderful and creative solutions to any concerns that we had.
Q: What were some surprises?
A: We live in a side by side duplex. I am constantly surprised by the privacy we have and the incredible amount of room we have, both inside and out.
Q: What would you recommend most to people starting the building process?
A: Be very familiar with the house plans. Go over them again and again and don’t be afraid to ask questions and voice concerns. It is far easier to make changes before the building begins.
Q: What was a customization you liked best?
A: We had a built-in wall of niches put in the family room downstairs where we can showcase art and our big-screen t.v. It is beautiful!
Q: What was the communication process like when working with Van Manna?
A: The communication was daily with Van Manna. Phone calls were promptly returned and meetings/walk throughs easily and happily complied with. Van Manna made this not only an easy process but a fun one, as well.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your home?
A: My favorite thing about our home is the open feel without losing any warmth. It is easy to entertain in and wonderful to come home to. It is exactly what we were looking for.
One of the most appealing inner-city neighborhoods in Calgary is the hub of shopping and café life that is the Southwest’s Marda Loop. What was once a bustling turnaround point for the Marda streetcar line in the mid-20th Century has grown in the last decade into a high profile lifestyle area for home-owners.
Fully self-contained with amenities like grocery stores, a post office, gyms, major drug stores and retailers, Marda Loop also features signature touches like quality record stores, pet boutiques, café’s, deli’s and even local mechanics. The area is also well established with parks and green spaces, situated a short walk away from the sprawling and popular River Park.
Community spirit is one of the selling features of this neighborhood as the infrastructure encourages foot traffic and support of local businesses. As a result of this community integration, grass roots ventures and home grown businesses thrive in Marda Loop. Community support also extends to making annual events like the Marda Gras Street Festival massive successes; the festival routinely pulls in huge numbers of residents and non-residents to the Loop every year.
Though there has been an increase in population density in this area due to luxury condo development, the main focus in recent years has been the modernization and development of custom homes. Large lot sizes and the frequency of parks and green spaces make it an appealing option for setting down roots. Not to mention the fact that the area is situated between two major thoroughfares (14th street SW to the East and Crowchild Trail to the West) making the commute to the downtown core quick and fairly painless (give or take the occasional weather-related panic or extended summertime road construction project). These selling features have led to the area coming alive with vibrant and exciting projects for custom home builders in Calgary.
Van Manna Homes has just broken ground on a project in Marda Loop and has been geared towards encouraging custom-home building in this quality inner-city location for some time. It boasts everything that is appealing about established central neighborhoods in Calgary: culture, lifestyle amenities, and the available space to build large and quality custom homes in a convenient location. It is the kind of neighborhood where you could take the dog for an off-leash walk, stroll with the kids into the main shopping district for hot chocolate, pick up a few groceries, and then take a 10 minute drive to go see the symphony that night downtown…or catch the latest Hobbit at the Eau Claire cinemas if that is more your speed. Marda Loop’s location and frills allow you and your home to be plugged directly into what makes this city such a vibrant place to call home.
